What we are currently witnessing in the United States under Trump is the erosion or dismantling of American democracy. The separation of powers has been set aside and an obvious oligarchic system has been established, which has as goal a dictatorship with strong colonial undertones.
This means that we can no longer rely on the democratic and legally binding mechanisms between states in the Western world since World War II.
When applying this to the economy or the IT sector, alarm bells should be ringing for all European companies, authorities, and organizations.
Who guarantees us that US-based cloud services will not be shut down or simply read out and used by others at a whim? Trump has demonstrated that he has the legal authority, power, and will to do so. Intelligent and logical mechanisms in this area no longer apply under his leadership.
What should our consequence be?
The construction of resilient, legally assessable cloud services or local alternatives.
It is also sensible to reevaluate the software-based dependence on closed-source infrastructures and assign a critical value to these systems based on their importance.
This should not be an overhasty withdrawal from all US-based software and cloud solutions. Rather, it makes sense to invest time in reassessing these things.
